"If you look right here, said Mr. Larson, pointing to the map, "you'll see what may help to explain why so many rare and large creatures have been spotted in Monterey Bay. This area is the great Submarine Canyon-an enormous underwater trench. It's so big, in fact, that the Grand Canyon in Arizona would fit inside it, with room to spare! Those deep, dark waters are only beginning to be explored. Who knows what rare and strange creatures might be dwelling there?"
"Aye, who knows?" said a familiar voice. "More rare and strange than you might think!"
"Vito!" Jody exclaimed as she spun around. "Where did you come from?"
"Oh, I just washed in with the last wave," Vito replied with a wink. "But go on, Bill, I want to hear what you have to say about these rare and strange creatures."
"Me, too," said Johnny.
Mr. Larson laughed. "What's the matter, Johnny? Aren't giant turtles and octopuses enough for you?"
"And three-thousand-pound sunfish," Jody added. "And great blue whales." She showed her teeth. "And sharks!"
Vito rubbed his nose. "Aye, and wolf-eels and bat rays, and flatfish. And how about sheephead? They start out as girls and turn into boys! But I think there are stranger things even than those." . . .
